What Are The Chances?

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

This poem was written in 2010. It became a song in a musical I wrote for The Ruby Dolls called Fabulous Creatures. Robert Webb read it on Cerys Matthews show in September 2020.

What are the chances?

What are the dances

Electrons danced?

What genetic leaps?

What lava spills?

What continent-bumping thrills?

What meteoric near-misses?

What frog-kisses?

And carbon got hot?

What a lot of not...

Not falling down the stairs

And not being able to take that job?

What a lot of narrow escapes and close things

And close shaves and close calls

And closest of all – are we.

What a long shot

What are the odds?

What races won and lost

Amongst those teeming arthropods?

What moons must have whirled?

And sparks flew

And tides unfurled

And mountains grew

And fell

And grew?

And men and women said I love you, love you too?

When I think of life without you

I can see

Space leak in round this Christmas bauble world

And, suddenly, my breath in front of me
